Social media image sizes, for every platform
The aspect ratios and file-size caps each platform documents for post images, with the platform's own page and the check date beside every value. Where a platform documents no fixed size, the page says so rather than printing an invented number.
Social media image sizes are the aspect ratio and file-size limits each platform documents for the images in your posts, and the honest answer is that platforms publish ratios rather than fixed pixel dimensions. Instagram documents a ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1 with an 8MB cap, LinkedIn documents 3:1 to 4:5 with a 5MB cap, and Facebook documents a 10MB file cap and no organic ratio at all.
Most charts for this query are the same invented table wearing different fonts. This page only prints what a platform actually published, with the source and check date beside each value, and where a platform documents nothing it says so rather than filling the gap from someone else's chart. The practical rule: build your image once at a generous square or portrait size, keep the aspect ratio the platform asks for, and let the platform resize. Image sizes, explained
What a social media image size actually is
A platform documents an aspect ratio and a maximum file size, not a fixed pixel grid. Instagram documents a ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1 with an 8MB cap and a width from 320 to 1440 pixels; LinkedIn documents 3:1 to 4:5 with a 5MB cap. Each figure in the tables above carries its source page and check date.
How to size one image for every platform
Get the ratio right first, then the file size: build one square master with safe margins, export the portrait and landscape crops each platform asks for, and stay under the documented cap. The three steps below turn that into a routine.
Free to use, no account needed
This reference is free and needs no login. If you want the images made for you, SpeedRun Social's free plan is 300 credits a month refilled forever, one free campaign a week (3 posts, 1 video, 1 cross-post), no card, watermarked media on free.
For caption limits, video caps, and hashtag rules, see the full post limits reference, or check a caption against each platform's limit with the character counter.
How to pick a size without the charts
Aspect ratio first, pixels second
The ratio is what the platform states and what its feeds crop to. If you get the ratio right at a decent resolution, the platform's resize does the rest. Fixed pixel charts are the giveaway that a table was invented.
One master image, exported per ratio
Design one square master with safe margins, then export the portrait and landscape crops from it. The safe-margin habit matters more than any single dimension, because feeds crop edges differently.
Keep the file under the documented cap
Where a platform states a max file size, stay under it. Where it does not, the sane default is a few megabytes: large enough to stay sharp, small enough to upload everywhere.
Questions people ask about image sizes
What are the social media image sizes for every platform?
There is no single pixel size, and any chart that claims one is inventing. What the platforms document is an aspect ratio and a file-size cap. Instagram documents a ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1 with an 8MB cap, LinkedIn documents 3:1 to 4:5 with a 5MB cap, and Facebook documents a 10MB cap with no organic ratio. The tables above carry every documented number with its source and check date.
Is there a standard social media size?
No. The same post renders at different sizes on different screens, so what stays constant is the aspect ratio and the file cap, which is what the platforms publish. The closest thing to a safe default is a square 1080x1080 master with safe margins, exported to portrait and landscape as each platform asks.
What size should an Instagram post image be?
Instagram's publishing API documents JPEG only, an 8MB maximum, a ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1, and a width from 320 to 1440 pixels. Get the ratio right and stay under the cap, and the platform resizes the rest.
What size should a Facebook post image be?
Facebook documents a 10MB file cap and recommends PNG files stay at or under 1MB to avoid pixelation. It documents no organic aspect ratio, so any pixel size you see quoted for Facebook came from a third-party chart, not from Facebook.
How do I resize images for social media?
Start from one square master with safe margins, export the portrait and landscape crops each platform asks for, and keep every file under the documented cap. The how-to steps above walk through the same order: ratio first, then file size.
Is there a free social media image size tool?
This page is a free reference with no account needed. If you want the images made for you, SpeedRun Social's free plan is 300 credits a month refilled forever, one free campaign a week (3 posts, 1 video, 1 cross-post), no card, watermarked media on free, and it renders each post's image at its platform's ratio.
Why do different sites list different social media image sizes?
Because most of them are copying the same invented table. The platforms mostly publish aspect ratios, not fixed pixels, so a chart full of specific pixel sizes was usually made up by one site and copied by the rest. This page only prints numbers a platform published, and says so when it documents none.
Have your images made at the right ratio
SpeedRun generates each post's image at its platform's aspect ratio from your own brand kit. One campaign a week is free, no card required.
