Facebook post character limit

Facebook does not publish a character limit for post text, on its help centre or in the Page Feed reference.

This is the answer most people do not expect, so it is worth being exact about what was read. The Page Feed reference documents the message field of a post with no length limit, and describes a photo caption only as a UTF-8 string that supports emoji. The help centre articles on posting say nothing about length. The 63,206 figure that appears on nearly every spec chart is not on any Facebook or Meta page read for this table, so this page records the limit as not documented rather than repeating a number Facebook has not put its name to.

Facebook hashtag limit

Facebook publishes no maximum number of hashtags, only rules about how a hashtag is written.

Facebook's hashtag page is about form, not count. A hashtag must be a single word with no spaces, numbers are allowed, and punctuation and special characters such as $ and % do not work. The Reels publishing reference says a description supports hashtags and sets no cap either. Any hashtag count you see printed for Facebook is a recommendation from somebody other than Facebook.

Facebook Reels length limit

A Reel sent through the publishing API can be 3 to 90 seconds, and the help centre says a reel posted in the app can be any length.

Two official pages, two rules, and the difference is the surface you publish from. The Reels publishing reference, the page the Graph API follows, sets the duration at 3 to 90 seconds and returns an error for anything outside it. The help centre was updated in September 2025 to say that every video posted to Facebook is shared as a reel regardless of length or orientation, and its change notice repeats that a reel can be any length. A scheduling tool that publishes through the API lives under the first rule; a person tapping upload in the app lives under the second. Both are shown.

Facebook Reels aspect ratio and resolution

The publishing reference specifies 9 x 16, recommends 1080 x 1920 pixels with a 540 x 960 minimum, and accepts 24 to 60 frames per second.

The spec table on the Reels publishing reference names one aspect ratio, 9 x 16, while the error text on the same page accepts anything between 16x9 and 9x16, so a landscape or square video is not refused by the API even though portrait is what the table asks for. Resolution is a recommendation with a floor: 1080 x 1920 is recommended and 540 x 960 is the minimum. Frame rate runs from 24 to 60. The help centre, for its part, says orientation no longer matters in the app since the September 2025 change.

Facebook photo size limit

A photo published through the Graph API cannot exceed 10 MB, and the help centre recommends staying under 15 MB.

The cap and the recommendation come from different Facebook pages and are both shown. The Page Photos reference sets the hard limit at 10 MB, recommends keeping a PNG at or under 1 MB to avoid pixelation, and lists the accepted types as .jpeg, .bmp, .png, .gif and .tiff. The Photo node repeats the 10 MB figure and rules out animated photos. The help centre's troubleshooting page recommends photos under 15 MB, which is advice rather than a limit. Facebook publishes no pixel dimensions at all; it says it resizes every image for the sizes it renders and strips location metadata before publishing.

Facebook carousel post limit

A link carousel holds 2 to 5 cards, and Facebook publishes no cap on the number of photos in a multi-photo post.

The word carousel covers two different posts on Facebook. A multi-link post, the kind built from child attachments, needs at least 2 links and takes at most 5; with the multi_share_optimized flag the reference accepts up to 10 and displays the top 5. A multi-photo post has no published cap: the Page Photos reference shows the attached media list with no maximum. The only photo count Facebook states anywhere is 1,000 per album, which is an album limit and not a post limit.

Facebook scheduled post window

A scheduled Page post must go live between 10 minutes and 75 days from the request, or 30 days by the Pages API guide's account.

The Page Feed reference documents the scheduled publish time as a UNIX timestamp between 10 minutes and 75 days out. The Pages API posts guide, which walks through the same call, says 10 minutes to 30 days. Both pages are current Meta documentation, so both windows are shown; a post scheduled inside 30 days satisfies either. Facebook's help centre states no window of its own for scheduling from Meta Business Suite.

What happens past each limit

Facebook publishes the consequence for its Reels limits in the form of API errors. A Reel outside 3 to 90 seconds returns error 1363128, with the message that the duration is not supported for this product. A Reel outside the 16x9 to 9x16 range returns error 1363040. A video file that is too small returns error 382. A hashtag written with a space, punctuation or a special character does not work as a hashtag, in Facebook's own words.

For everything else Facebook publishes no consequence, because it publishes no limit. What happens to a very long post, a post with many hashtags or a post with many photos is not documented on any Facebook or Meta page read for this table. The photo cap is a hard 10 MB in the Graph API, but the reference does not say what the upload form does with a larger file. This page will not guess.
