Instagram post limits

Instagram allows up to 5 tags on a post, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags through the publishing API, and a 2,200-character caption. Every number below links to the Instagram or Meta page it came from, checked 18 September 2026.

Every figure checked 18 September 2026.

Instagram hashtag limit

You can use up to 5 hashtags on a post in the app, and the publishing API allows up to 30 hashtags in a caption.

Instagram's help centre sets the app limit at five tags on a post, and adds that a comment carrying more than five will not post. The publishing API reference sets its own ceiling at 30 hashtags in a caption. Both pages are official and both were live on the same day, so this page shows both instead of picking one.

Instagram tag limit per post

Instagram's help centre phrase is 'up to 5 tags on a post', and a caption sent through the publishing API can tag up to 20 accounts.

The word tag does two jobs on Instagram. In the help centre it means a hashtag, and the limit is five on a post. In the publishing API it means an @ mention, and the reference allows up to 20 @ tags in a caption. They are two different counters, which is why a page that prints one number without saying which it means is guessing.

Instagram caption character limit

A caption can be up to 2,200 characters.

The publishing API reference sets the caption ceiling at 2,200 characters, with 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags, all in one sentence. Hashtags and @ tags spend the same 2,200-character budget as the words. Instagram's help centre does not state a separate caption number, so 2,200 is the figure this page documents.

Instagram carousel slide limit

You can share up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel post.

Instagram's help centre sets the carousel ceiling at 20 photos and videos in a single post. The count is a mix of photos and videos. Instagram does not state what happens past 20.

Instagram Reels length limit

You can record a Reel up to 20 minutes long.

Instagram's help centre sets the Reels ceiling at 20 minutes, and notes that Reels over 3 minutes will not be recommended to new audiences. The publishing API reference sets its own ceiling at 15 minutes. The app and the API publish different numbers, so both are shown.

Instagram bio character limit

You can write a bio of up to 150 characters.

Instagram's help centre sets the bio ceiling at 150 characters, and notes that anyone can see your bio. The limit applies to the bio text; the link field is separate.

Instagram image size and aspect ratio

A feed image must be JPEG, 8MB or less, with an aspect ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1, and 320 to 1,440 pixels wide.

The publishing API reference documents JPEG only, an 8MB maximum, an aspect ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1, and a width from 320 to 1,440 pixels. Instagram recommends 9:16 for Reels and Stories to avoid cropping. The ratio is what Instagram states; fixed pixel charts usually come from third parties.

What happens past each limit

Instagram documents one consequence of going over a limit: its hashtag page says a comment carrying more than five tags will not post.

For the other limits, Instagram does not publish what happens past them. The caption reference does not say what happens past 2,200 characters. The carousel page does not say what happens past 20. The Reels and bio pages describe only the limit itself. This page will not invent the rest.

How SpeedRun Social keeps posts inside these limits

SpeedRun Social writes every Instagram caption to a 2,200-character ceiling and caps its hashtags at 6 per post, both enforced by the code that generates the caption. A caption sent through the publishing API may carry up to 30 hashtags, so 6 sits under the API ceiling; the app's five-tag sentence applies to hashtags typed in by hand. The review preview shows the caption and its hashtags before anything publishes.
